The Dragon's Journey: A Path to Self-Understanding
Today you will understand how your inner dragon speaks to you and how you can turn that voice into a powerful ally in your life.
“It is not your shadow nor your burden. It is your flying companion.”
A Silent Struggle
Imagine waking up one morning feeling overwhelmed. The dawn of the day ahead feels like a monster in the room. Anxiety begins to bubble in your mind: “What if I don’t do it right? What if I fail? What if…?” This is the story of Laura, a working mother who, day after day, feels trapped between work and personal responsibilities, in a cycle of stress and self-criticism that never ends.
As she prepares, her mind overwhelms her with criticisms. “Why can’t you be more organized? Why can’t you enjoy what you have?” The voice of the dragon manifests, reminding her of her past failures, her insecurities, and her need to have total control at all times. Laura feels trapped, but she doesn’t know how to free herself.
However, in an unexpected twist, Laura remembers something her mentor told her: “Your dragon is not broken. It just needs a rider who knows where it wants to go.” Suddenly, she realizes she can change this narrative.
What’s Happening Inside
Laura’s story is repeated in many of us. The dragon, that old anxious reptile residing in our minds, acts from a survival mode. It protects us, but often becomes the inner voice that criticizes and sabotages us. This dragon knows no logic; it acts according to our instinct, sometimes to the detriment of our well-being.
According to neuroscience, when we face stressful or anxious situations, our amygdala activates, generating immediate fight or flight responses. The rational part of our mind, the rider, steps back and loses control to this instinctive reaction.
This dynamic creates the inner voice that judges us and causes distress. However, recognizing that this voice belongs to a dragon that wants to protect us is the first step to starting the dialogue. It’s not about defeating the dragon but learning to speak with it.
The Reins of Self-Compassion
To begin transforming our relationship with the dragon, we can use the concept of reins. One of the most powerful is the Verbal Rein: the language we use when we speak to ourselves. Instead of falling into negative expressions like “I have to,” we can choose to change our words: “I choose” or “I allow myself.”
This simple change in how we express our thoughts can be a first step towards self-respect. It is essential to connect with the intention behind our words, as this helps the dragon feel less threatened and more willing to listen to the rider.
Deep Exercise: Conversing with the Dragon
Now it’s time to work on the internal. Write a list of the things your dragon tells you when you make a mistake. These statements may be harsh and critical. Now, look at them as visitors in your mind. Next, transform each statement into something positive and self-compassionate:
- “I can’t do this” —> “I am learning; this is part of the process.”
- “I am a failure” —> “I have had failures, but that does not define who I am.”
- “I am not enough” —> “I am on a journey of self-exploration and always growing.”
Through this exercise, you begin to see that your dragon has a voice that, although intimidating, can be transformed.
Reflecting on Transformation
Returning to Laura's story, imagine that instead of allowing her dragon to sink her into anguish, she chooses to listen. Imagine how her day would change: facing her tasks with the confidence that her mistakes do not define her, but are opportunities for learning.
Laura becomes a symbol of what we can all achieve by changing our relationship with our dragon. We can establish a new internal dialogue where the rider and the dragon work together towards a new adventure.
