Imagine it’s a calm morning, and yet, inside you, a whirlwind of thoughts is unleashed. That critical voice that never stops, reminding you of your past mistakes and plunging you into doubt. This is the story of many of us, and mine is no exception. I remember a particularly distressing day: I was facing a challenge at work that seemed monumental. I was paralyzed by the fear of not measuring up, of failing, of letting myself and others down. I began to listen to that inner voice, a fierce dragon that seemed intent on consuming all my effort.

But what if I told you that this dragon is not your enemy? While sometimes it seems like it wants to devour you, there is a purpose behind its roar: to protect you. In that internal struggle, I realized that the dragon was simply looking for direction, for connection. That revelation changed my perspective and marked the beginning of my journey towards self-understanding and mental peace.

What’s Happening Inside You?

When you feel trapped by fear and anxiety, it’s easy to think you are broken. But that’s not true. What’s happening is that your reptilian brain, the dragon, is activated. This part of your mind acts from instinct, guided by the desire to protect you. At its core, it is not the enemy; it is an integral part of yourself that simply needs guidance.

The dragon responds to what it knows: past experiences, deep emotions, and automatic reactions. When it feels threatened, it reacts dramatically. But as a skilled rider, you can learn to listen to your dragon. You can give it structure and purpose, rather than suppressing its voice. In this journey, it’s essential to understand that you are not alone. Your mind, like a dragon, just needs gentle guidance, not a power struggle.

Tools to Master the Flight

This is where the dragon methodology comes into play.

One of the most effective tools is the Verbal Reins. Have you noticed the language you use with yourself? Changing “I have to” to “I choose” transforms pressure into empowerment. This simple word allows you to take control, and the dragon begins to feel it has a purpose.

Another powerful tool is the Visual Reins. Ask yourself: what image do you visualize at the start of the day? This image can define your journey. A clear focus can pull you out of that mental inertia and lead you to a smooth landing on the goals you wish to achieve.

A Self-Awareness Exercise

Now, I invite you to perform a deep reflection exercise. Take a piece of paper and write a list of the phrases your dragon repeats in moments of failure. Do you remember yourself as defective or incapable? Once you have that list, go through each one and transform every negative statement into one you would use with someone you love. For example, if you wrote “I can’t do this,” change it to “I am learning and that’s okay.” This exercise will not only lift a weight but will open doors to a new relationship with your thoughts.

Returning to my story, the day I understood that my dragon did not want to harm me was a transformative day. Instead of fearing the storm, I learned to fly through it. I began to listen and guide my dragon, establishing agreements between my mind and my deeper self. I learned that it’s not about controlling, but about collaborating.
