Master Your Dragon: How to Transform Fear into Potential
Today you are going to understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you and how to start turning it into your ally.
“It is not your shadow nor your burden. It is your flying partner.”
The Story of a Rider
Imagine someone facing a new opportunity. It could be a job, a relationship, or an exciting project. They feel thrilled but also overwhelmed with doubts. You think the moment has arrived, and then, boom! The dragon appears. An internal voice, Hoarse and fearsome, whispers in your ear: “You are not good enough. You are going to fail.”
The scene is common: sitting at the office, the computer open, a sea of ideas eager to come out, but something holds you back. You feel paralyzed as the dragon feeds on your fears, making you question everything you once considered possible.
But there is a way out. And that path begins with an internal transformation.
Listening to Your Dragon
The dragon in our mind is not an enemy; it is a part of ourselves, an ancestral instinct. We know that fear can be overwhelming, but understanding the nature of that fear is the first step towards freedom. Here is where neuropsychology comes into play: the reptilian brain activates in stressful situations and leads us to react with fear, judgment, or control. This evolutionary mechanism was helpful to our ancestors, but today it just holds us back.
Connecting with the dragon is essential. Just as a rider establishes a relationship with their horse, it is vital to learn to communicate and find a common purpose. The dragon wants to protect you, and this is where the real magic begins: by tuning into this relationship, absorbing its lessons, and channeling its energy, you can steer your life in a new direction.
Reinvent Your Relationship: The Rider's Tools
To achieve this, we need reins. Imagine these tools as a bridge connecting your intention with action:
- Verbal Rein: Change your words. From “I have to” to “I choose.” This simple modification transforms your perspective and motivation.
- Visual Rein: What you observe defines what you perceive. Visualize success, opportunity. What image do you wish to have at the start of the day?
- Emotional Rein: Your emotions are just visitors. Name them without getting attached; transform “I am anxious” into “I feel anxiety at this moment.”
- Behavioral Rein: Create simple and meaningful habits. A daily intentional action is more powerful than any elaborate plan.
A Contract with Yourself
But what if you could formalize your new deal with yourself? This is where contracts come in. It’s simple; each contract defines a new way of working with yourself:
- Recognize: “What I am, have, and do is already enough.” Reduce self-demand and sow self-compassion.
- Thrive: “I can go for more without fear of getting lost.” Expand your horizons without the weight of fear.
- Enjoy: “Value is also in what is already there.” Acknowledge and celebrate your current achievements.
- Forgive: “I carry no more than what I've already learned.” Free up mental and emotional space, allowing for better flow in your life.
Your Practice Space: The Weyr
Finally, create your weyr, the place where you practice that connection with yourself. It doesn’t have to be a sacred space. It can be a notebook, your desk, or even a park. The essential thing is that it helps you return to your reins and contracts, to focus and practice your relationship with your dragon.
Inner Transformation: A Deep Exercise
Now that you understand the dynamics of the dragon and the rider, here is an exercise. Take a moment to write a list of the phrases your dragon repeats every time you feel insecure. Then, for each item on the list, rewrite a positive affirmation that you would use with someone you love. This simple exercise can change the narrative in your mind.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
Life is a constant journey of self-discovery. No matter how many times you feel you have failed, each experience offers a valuable lesson. Your dragon is not broken; it just needs a rider who understands where it wants to go.
So, instead of trying to eliminate fear, collaborate with it. Together you can soar the skies. When you are able to listen to your dragon and guide it, life becomes a field of limitless possibilities.
