Taming Your Dragon: A Journey Toward Self-Knowledge
Taming Your Dragon: A Journey Toward Self-Knowledge
Today you will understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you, and how to start turning it into your ally.
"It is not your shadow or your burden. It is your flying companion."
A Common Day, an Internal Struggle
The morning began like any other. I woke up with my head full of thoughts, those that sometimes feel like an uncontrollable whirlwind. "I have to submit that report, I need to prepare dinner, and what if I can’t finish everything on time?" As I washed my face, I saw in the mirror a version of myself struggling with anxiety.
The dragon was already awake, ready to remind me of every pressing detail. I felt its presence intensifying, as if it were cornering me among my own fears. But it wasn’t just the dragon that was there; the rider was there too, albeit somewhat intimidated.
The hours passed, and every time the phone rang, a wave of fear shook my chest. "What if I can’t do it this time? What if I fail?" But in the midst of that storm, I started to remember something I had learned: internal dialogue is key. In that moment, I decided to talk to myself differently. I can choose how to perceive these challenges. I can be kind to myself.
Understanding the Dragon and the Rider
Now, think about this: the dragon is not your enemy. It represents that part of you that acts from instinct, that wants to protect you from pain and failure. But, like everything in life, it needs direction and purpose. The dragon can fly high, but it gets lost without its rider in control.
Meanwhile, the rider is that awareness that observes, decides, and directs. It’s not about crushing the dragon, but about learning to dialogue with it. Many of us, on our path to self-knowledge, forget this crucial point. The rider does not control; it guides.
The Tools for Transformation
Are you wondering how to do this? I present you a powerful tool: the reins. They are the bridges between your intention and your action. The verbal rein is fundamental. For example, instead of saying "I have to," start saying "I choose." This simple change of words can radically alter how you approach your tasks.
Visualize your goals, understand that your emotions are temporary visitors, and establish a positive, simple habit to practice daily. Remember, consistency is more important than perfection.
Exercise to Connect with Your Dragon
Now, let’s do a deep exercise. Take a notebook and write down the phrases your dragon repeats when you fail. Phrases like: "it’s never enough" or "you always make mistakes." Then take those thoughts and rewrite them with a loving perspective, as you would with someone you love. For example, change "it’s never enough" to "today I am doing my best." This exercise will not only generate self-awareness but also allow you to reconnect emotionally with yourself.
A New Opportunity to Fly
As I close the notebook, I feel a mix of relief and clarity. Remember: your dragon is not broken; it just needs a rider who knows where it wants to go. By listening to your dragon, you can refine your relationship with it.
Life is a journey full of possibilities; the day I chose to be kind to myself changed everything. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I felt for the first time like I was piloting my own flight. By accepting challenges with an open heart, I no longer felt like a prisoner of my thoughts. I invite you to do the same; this path of self-knowledge is already laid out.
