Taming Your Dragon: How to Turn Fear into Your Flying Companion

Today you will understand how you can transform your relationship with fear and make it a powerful ally in your life.

"Fear is not the enemy, it is the guardian of our destiny." - unknown

A Common Day in the Life of a Rider

Imagine waking up on an ordinary morning, the sky is blue and the sun is shining brightly. You feel excited about a new project at work, but as the day progresses, unease begins to overshadow your enthusiasm. Your mind starts filling with critical voices, and the memory of past failures traps you. Instead of feeling capable, you feel small and vulnerable, as if your inner dragon is at the wheel, roaring and demanding control. You feel that you are letting yourself down, that your dreams are unattainable, and that fear wraps you in a dense fog.

This is a common experience for many. You may see yourself reflected in this story. The dragon that resides in your mind is powerful, but what if I told you that it is not your enemy? Rather, it is a part of you that only seeks to protect you. I invite you to explore how the dragon can become a companion instead of an obstacle.

Getting to Know Your Dragon: What's Happening Inside?

The dragon that we all carry within is our reptilian brain, which reacts through fear and the need for control. It activates in times of conflict, and it’s natural to feel that its presence limits you. The key is to understand that the problem does not lie with the dragon, but with the relationship you have with it.

Did you know that your internal voice, that relentless critic, comes from the dragon's desire to protect you? It warns you about perceived dangers, but often extends its domain to everyday life. It is here that the awareness of the rider comes into play. The voice of your rider is clear: you are safe. Your dragon needs structure, direction, and purpose.

When you understand how to manage this internal struggle, you begin to see fear as an ally. Neuroscience tells us that the brain, when it understands better what it is facing, operates in a calmer manner. The key is to sit with fear and talk to it, not always shout at it.

The Reins: Tools for Your Journey

To begin this transformation, you need to use practical tools. The reins are essential in this relationship. Each of them helps you focus your attention, and here are some you can implement:

  • Verbal Rein: Modify your language. Instead of "I have to," use "I choose." This simple change empowers your internal voice and gives the dragon a new perspective.
  • Visual Rein: Take notice of your surroundings and choose which images inspire you. What do you see at the start of the day? Visual focus can change your energy.
  • Emotional Rein: Acknowledge your emotions as visitors. You feel anxious or sad, but you are not those feelings. Name them and let them pass.
  • Behavioral Rein: A simple daily action can have a greater impact than any composed plan. Choose one small action with intention each day.

Creating Contracts: Internal Pacts for Change

The contracts you establish with yourself are fundamental. Each one defines a new way to interact with your dragon. Here are some examples:

  • Recognize: “Who I am, what I have, and what I do is already enough.” This halts self-demand.
  • Thrive: “I can go for more without fear of getting lost.” It propels you to move forward with direction.
  • Enjoy: “The value is also in what is already there.” Shifts the lens to a more appreciative one.
  • Forgive: “I carry no more than what I have already learned.” Frees you emotionally to move on.

Cultivating Your Practice Space: Weyr

Your practice space, or weyr, must be functional. You don’t need a sacred place, but one where you can return to yourself. This could be a sheet of paper, a daily walk, or even a reflective conversation. The important thing is that in that space, you return to yourself, to your reins, and to your contracts.

An Exercise to Connect with Your Dragon

Now that you know how to interact with your dragon, here is an activity that will help strengthen the connection:

Make a list of phrases that your dragon repeats when you feel like you've failed. Then, transform each phrase into something kinder and more compassionate, as if you were speaking to a dear friend. Ask yourself: What would I say to someone I love in this situation?

The Transformation: A New Possibility

At the end of this journey, reflect on the initial story. Imagine that instead of being dominated by fear, you sit down to talk with it. Your dragon becomes a wise companion, guiding you toward new possibilities. When you stop fighting against this impulse, you begin to fly together, free and in harmony.

Remember: the rider does not control. The rider guides. I invite you to take this wisdom and practice. Make your dragon your flying companion.
