A Daily Story
You wake up in the middle of the night, a troubling thought torments you: “What if I fail at my job?” You turn over in bed, and fear becomes a furious dragon, its wings beating in your mind, dragging you into anxiety. The next day, you find yourself in front of your colleagues, and instead of showing confidence, you hesitate. The gazes turn into fire, and with every word, your dragon roars with distrust. “You’re not good enough,” it whispers. But what if you could listen to your dragon without letting it control you? What if by looking closely, you understood that it doesn’t seek to destroy you, but to protect you from potential pain? This is where our transformation begins.
What’s Happening Inside
What you are experiencing resonates in the depths of your brain: that dragon, your reptilian brain, drags along old wounds, survival instincts, and learned patterns. It lives in survival mode and, therefore, wants to protect you by regurgitating automatic thoughts of criticism and judgment. Practical Tool: The Reins
The first tool I want to share with you is the verbal rein, which will change the way you connect with yourself. For every “I have to,” switch it to “I choose.” This simple modification transforms your internal dialogue: you can choose to move forward, rest, or change course. Respond to your thoughts as a rider who knows where they are going, and in doing so, you will see how your dragon begins to calm down and prepares to take flight with you.
Deep Exercise
Now, take a moment to reflect. Grab a piece of paper and write a list of the phrases your dragon repeats when you feel like you are failing. Then, change each of them to phrases you would use with someone you love. For example, transform “you didn’t make it” into “you did your best.” This simple exercise will allow you to create a new conversation with your dragon, putting empathy into practice instead of judgment.
Reflective Closure
Returning to that sleepless night, imagine that upon waking, instead of fearing your dragon, you choose to calm it down, even applauding it for its effort to protect you.
