Master Your Dragon: A Journey Toward Self-Knowledge
Master Your Dragon: A Journey Toward Self-Knowledge
Discovering the Inner Dragon
Today you will understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you, and how to start turning it into your ally.
"It is neither your shadow nor your burden. It is your flight companion."
Imagine for a moment on a chaotic day. The alarm clock goes off late, the coffee spills, and missing that bus seems like the start of a series of misfortunes. That inner voice that criticizes, that pushes you toward chaos, is the typical melody of the dragon within you. We've all experienced it. The dragon is that part of our being that clings to fear and criticism and reacts on autopilot. But is there a way to transform that anguish into an ally?
The Daily Struggle
Think of a recent situation where you felt overwhelmed. Perhaps it was in a meeting at work, receiving criticism from a colleague, or dealing with a responsibility at home that felt too heavy. You remember that feeling, don’t you? The anxiety that accompanies you, the little voice that reproaches you, the one that thinks you will never be good enough.
Now imagine that instead of feeling trapped by that voice, you simply decide to listen to it. The story can change drastically if we allow our dragon to guide us instead of stopping us. After all, it is just a part of our being that seeks protection and wants to do what it considers right.
Getting to Know the Dragon: An Inner Journey
In order to navigate this relationship with our dragon, we need to understand what happens within our minds. The reptilian brain—the dragon—is our most primitive instance. It acts out of fear, the essential, and the immediate. It is not the enemy; it is a deeply rooted part of ourselves.
When we feel nervous or anxious, it's the dragon that takes control. ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) emerge, appear, and take over our internal narrative. But here lies the key: we have not gotten lost. We have just forgotten how to communicate with our dragon.
The Consciousness of the Rider
The rider—our consciousness—watches, decides, and directs. It doesn’t shout or pressure; it guides with clarity and patience. When we are aware of the tools at our disposal, we can start to untangle this chaotic dance with the dragon. A present rider makes cleaner and more useful decisions.
The Verbal Reins: Redefining Our Personal Narrative
One of the most powerful tools we have are the reins. These are the bridges that connect our intention with our actions. For example, instead of saying “I have to”, we can choose “I choose”. This simple reorientation of language can change our whole day.
Practical Example
You can start each morning choosing two or three intentions. What do you want to achieve today? Write it down. Visualize it. Remember, the dragon feels more secure when there is purpose and structure in daily life.
Reflection Exercise: The Path of the Rider
It’s time to go deeper. Challenge yourself to make an introspective list. What criticisms do you hear in your mind when you feel like you are failing? What negative messages emerge in those moments of vulnerability? Now, next to each one, write how you would speak to yourself, with love and compassion, if you were conversing with a loved one.
The Importance of Practice
The Weyr is your practice space. It is vital to create an environment where you can return to your reins and contracts. This place can be a simple notebook, a corner in your home, or a moment of contemplative silence. It is there where the dragon and you can start to find balance.
Opening New Possibilities
At the end of the day, each of us can decide how our narrative presents itself. Perhaps that dragon you thought was an enemy is, in fact, your companion on the journey of life. Can you imagine how your reality would change if you started to flow with your dragon instead of fighting against it?
