Understanding Your Dragon: The Path to Internal Collaboration

Today you will understand why sometimes your mind can be your worst enemy and how to transform it into your best ally.

“It is not your shadow or your burden. It is your flying companion.”

Imagine for a moment that you are a rider on the back of a magnificent dragon. It has always been there, but you have never fully understood it. Suddenly, you find yourself soaring for the first time, feeling the cool breeze and a mix of fear and excitement. That’s life, a journey full of surprises, where each of us tries to balance the power of our inner dragon with the direction we want to take.

Sometimes, the dragon feels like a wild beast that cannot be controlled, flying in erratic directions and leading you into areas of frustration and anxiety. We have heard many stories about dragons. In most of them, they are depicted as fearsome creatures to be tamed, defeated, or even carried. But what if I told you that your dragon is not your enemy, but an essential part of you that just wants to help you survive?

To illustrate this, let's think about an ordinary day in our life. You wake up, look at your agenda, and suddenly feel that pressure in your chest; that's your dragon. It throws thoughts at you like: “You won't make it,” “You're not good enough,” “What if you fail?” In that moment, many of us tend to enter survival mode, letting the dragon control our course.

However, this is where our transformation begins. Instead of seeing it as a burden, what if you start to listen to it? What if, instead of fighting against its fears, you decide to become its ally?

What is Happening Inside You?

When you feel frustrated or anxious, what is occurring is the result of your reptilian brain taking control. This part of your brain is responsible for automatic reactions, survival instincts. It is not broken, it is simply poorly trained. The dragon, which represents your most basic instincts, reacts out of fear and criticism, seeking to protect you from any potential danger.

But, how can we learn to work with our dragon?

First, it is crucial to understand that your dragon is not the problem. The problem is not listening to it, not dialoguing with it. Every time the dragon screams in fear, we are in survival mode. Its voice can be deafening: “You're not good enough,” “This is too risky.” Instead of trying to silence it, learn to listen to it. Sometimes, you need to pause and ask: “What do you need from me to feel safe?” This is where the rider takes control, not to dominate, but to guide.

Tools to Strengthen Your Relationship with Your Dragon

One of the powerful tools of this methodology is the Verbal Rein. Have you ever stopped to think about how you talk to yourself? The thoughts that flow through your mind can be critical or encouraging. By changing “I have to do it” to “I choose to do it,” you empower your actions while giving the dragon a sense of purpose.

Additionally, there is the Visual Rein. Have you ever wondered what images accompany you throughout the day? Imagine starting your morning with a positive visualization instead of allowing the dragon to present the worst possible outcomes. By focusing on what you want to achieve, you teach your mind that it can soar to greater heights.

The emotional reins are equally important. Emotions, while intense, are transient. Labeling them as visitors rather than your identities gives your dragon space to express itself without defining who you are.

Practical Example: The Inner Contract

Inner contracts are agreements you establish with yourself to foster a friendlier relationship with your dragon. For example, you can create a contract that says: “Who I am, what I have, and what I do is already enough.” This simple acknowledgment halts the self-demanding tendencies and allows for expansion without the burden of fear.

By applying these concepts, you'll experience a shift in your relationship with your thoughts and emotions. Your dragon will begin to trust you and collaborate, instead of sabotaging your efforts.

Exercise to Deepen Your Knowledge of Your Dragon

I invite you to take a moment and reflect. Write down a list of the phrases your dragon repeats every time you feel you are failing. Then, take some time to transform them. For each criticism, create a positive affirmation. If your dragon says: “You won’t be able to,” change it to: “I am on the path of learning and growing.”

Close with a New Possibility

Imagine that initial situation once again. Now, when you face tension and fear, instead of letting the dragon take you along, you decide to take control as the rider you are. In the end, the experience can be transformed into an intertwined flight, a dance of trust and collaboration. Your dragon can be a powerful companion instead of a burden.
