Master Your Dragon: The Key to Transforming Your Mind into an Ally
Today you will understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you, and how to start turning it into your ally.
"The mind is an excellent servant, but a terrible master." - David Foster Wallace
Imagine one day you decide to climb a mountain. The view from the top beckons you, but as you climb, you encounter obstacles: slippery rocks, unpredictable terrain, even your own anxiety. On this journey, you ask yourself, "Can I do it?" or "What if I fail?" This is where many of us find ourselves trapped, caught between the desire to reach the summit and the fear that arises within.
This story, my friends, is where the struggle between the dragon and the rider begins. The dragon, that internal voice of fear, doubt, and judgment. And the rider, that part of you that longs to move forward, that dreams big. How do you ensure that the rider is in control and not the dragon? The answer is not simple, but there is hope and tools we can use.
Understanding the Internal Struggle
Within us, there is a dragon: our reptilian brain, that automatic part of our mind that activates especially in situations of stress or danger. Instead of being our enemy, the dragon is an integral part of us that seeks to protect us. But sometimes, it can become a bit too protective, preventing us from making progress.
When we find ourselves caught in a cycle of negative thoughts, such as "I'm not good enough" or "I can't do this," we are allowing the dragon to take control. And what is the result? We become stagnant, paralyzed by the dragon's fear, while our rider, the conscious observer, is silenced.
This doesn't mean you have to fight against your dragon. Instead, you need to learn to listen to and guide that part of you. We use the dragon's approach to understand that the first needs direction, not domination. It needs a clear purpose to help it collaborate.
Practical Tool to Guide Your Dragon
One of the most effective techniques I recommend is using reins. These are tools that help you focus your dragon's attention toward a more positive and productive path.
- **Verbal Rein**: Change your internal language. Instead of saying "I have to," say "I choose to." This small change has a huge impact on your sense of control and empowerment.
- **Visual Rein**: Identify the image that inspires you each day. As you start your day, ask yourself: "What do I visualize for today?" This will help you stay focused on your goals.
- **Emotional Rein**: Experience your emotions as visitors. Instead of identifying as "anxious" or "depressed," say "I feel anxious" or "I feel sadness." This allows you to take a step back and observe your feelings without being consumed by them.
- **Behavioral Rein**: Define a simple daily action that you wish to incorporate into your life. For example, if you want to be more organized, start with a small task every day. Over time, those small changes add up to great results.
Reflection Exercise
Now it's time to pause and reflect. Take your notebook and answer these questions:
- What phrases do you tell your dragon when you feel trapped?
- What emotions do you feel in those moments and how do you name them?
- Can you identify a small daily action that could advance one of your goals?
Closing: A New Beginning
Imagine that after reflecting on your dragon and your rider, you decide to embark on a new path. The dragon is not gone; it is still there, but this time it is balanced by a stronger, more conscious, and more empowered rider. Now they can work together, each playing their role in the adventure of your life.
Instead of feeling limited by skepticism, start seeing the potential in each day. The journey may be challenging, but you have the ability to take flight.
