Master Your Dragon: The Journey to Your Inner Rider

Today you will understand how your mind can be both your best ally and your worst enemy, and how to create a powerful bond between your awareness and your instinct.

“It is not your shadow or your burden. It is your flying companion.”

Discovering the Inner Dragon

Imagine you are in an ancient forest, surrounded by the dense fog of fear and uncertainty. With each step, your thoughts begin to turn into cruel whispers, like a dragon watching you from the shadows. “You won’t make it,” it whispers. “You always fail.” These are the inner voices we all face, guided by an internal dragon charged with survival instincts.

In these moments of doubt, it’s easy to get lost and not know which way to go. Your dragon, that reptilian brain, activates and responds in an instinctive way, leaving you in a state of fight or flight. But what if I told you that this dragon is not your enemy? On the contrary, it is a fundamental part of you!

Feeling the Tension

When the dragon senses you are in danger, it protects itself by activating defense mechanisms. At this moment, anxiety can take over you. There is a great tension between the dragon and the rider; while one seeks to survive, the other desires evolution. The dragon is always lurking, wanting to protect you, while the rider seeks to guide you forward, toward growth.

I invite you to imagine an everyday scene: a day at work, where an important project must be delivered. The dragon begins to shout at you from within, assuming that you will not pass the test. But the rider in you must take the reins and decide how to move forward. Will you allow fear to define your path, or will you choose to challenge that dragon from a place of understanding and compassion?

The Voice of the Dragon: Understanding Its Message

Let’s make one thing clear: the dragon is not your enemy. It is your instinct, your automatic reaction to fear and criticism. It is the guardian of your emotional history, an ancient protector. It perceives any threat to your well-being and responds quickly. But what is essential to understand is that it is not rational. However, it needs a clear direction. Therefore, it is crucial to learn to listen to its voice and understand its message.

When we talk about the reptilian brain and survival mode, we’re talking about a system that needs to be educated. Always remember that you are not broken, just poorly trained. Listening to the dragon attentively will allow you to better guide it rather than submit to it.

Gripping the Reins: Tools for Connection

One of the best ways to strengthen your relationship with your dragon is through the reins. These are tools that allow you to focus your attention and direct your dragon’s energy toward a positive place.

  • Verbal Rein: How you talk to yourself changes how you act. Instead of saying “I have to,” try “I choose” to empower your decisions.
  • Visual Rein: What you look at defines what you see. Do you focus on images that inspire you to start the day with positive energy?
  • Emotional Rein: Name your emotions as visitors, not as identities. Recognizing your emotions allows them not to control you.
  • Behavioral Rein: Establishing a simple daily habit, such as meditating or writing, is more effective than a thousand long-term plans.

Formulating Internal Contracts

Additionally, internal contracts are agreements you can establish with yourself to foster your self-awareness and growth. These contracts can be simple, but they provide a clear purpose in your life.

  • Recognize: “What I am, have, and do is already enough.” Question the self-demand.
  • Thrive: “I can go for more without fearing losing myself.” Accelerate your progress with a sure direction.
  • Enjoy: “Value is also in what is already there.” Shift your perspective towards gratitude.
  • Forgive: “I no longer carry more than what I have learned.” Free up emotional and mental space to grow.

Practicing in Your Personal Weyr

Your weyr is the space where you connect with yourself and your dragon. It can be a journal, a meditation session, or simply a quiet place to reflect. Regular practice will help you remain present and aware of your reins and contracts.

Deep Exercise: Confronting the Dragon

Now it’s time for you to dive into an introspective exercise. Take paper and pen and reflect on what your dragon tells you when you feel anxious or overwhelmed. Create a list of the negative phrases it repeats: “I’m not good enough,” “I always get it wrong.” Then, change them for affirmations you would use to support someone you love. “I did the best I could,” “Mistakes are part of learning.” This transformation can be revealing and powerful.

A New Beginning

Embrace an act of openness to what you are learning. Remember our initial story of the forest; as you start to understand and guide your dragon, you will experience a radical change. Imagine that day at work again. Now, when the dragon emerges with its fears, your rider will guide it with compassion and clarity. Your mind will no longer be a battlefield but a space to soar high and achieve your dreams.

Remember: The dragon and the rider are one being.
