Taming Your Dragon: How to Transform Fear into Inner Strength

Today you will understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you, and how to start turning it into your ally.

"Fear is a dragon lurking in the dark; if we learn to fly with it, we can reach the stars."

A Morning Like Any Other

It was an ordinary day, and I was sitting in my favorite café, watching the steam from my coffee disappear among the passing crowd. Life continued on, but inside me, there was a silent battle. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, a dragon breathing fire at every moment: "You can't do this. You're not good enough. People are going to laugh at you." I paused and took a breath, feeling a weight in my chest. This internal dialogue was familiar to me. Many of us carry within us a dragon that whispers words of insecurity and fear.

However, as I watched others, I realized that my thoughts were not the truth. I had lived long enough to know that the voice criticizing me was nothing more than a defense mechanism. It was time to change the narrative.

What Is Happening Inside You?

What you experience in those moments of anxiety and self-criticism is deeply linked to your reptilian brain, that part of you that fights for survival. This ancestral dragon activates in stressful situations, giving you impulsive responses that are not always correct.

Your mind becomes a restless monkey, jumping from one thought to another, feeding on ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts), those little negative thoughts that appear out of nowhere.

To disarm this reaction, it is crucial that you learn to listen to your dragon. This is not your enemy; it is a part of you that needs direction. With each negative thought, ask yourself: "What is the intention behind this fear?" It is here where the dialogue begins.

Reins for Your Dragon

Now that you understand your dragon, it is time to equip yourself with tools. The reins are essential to focus your dragon's attention and guide it to a more constructive place.

Verbal Reins: Change "I have to" to "I choose." Start your day affirming: "I choose to be brave in the face of my challenges."

Visual Reins: What image inspires you? As you begin your day, visualize how you want it to unfold. What colors, emotions, and scenarios energize you?

Emotional Reins: When feeling fear or anger, name them as visitors. "Today I feel fear; it is here to visit me, but it is not me."

Behavioral Reins: Establish a small habit, like writing down three things you are grateful for each morning. These small actions shape your path.

Exercise: Getting to Know Your Dragon

Now that you have your reins, it's time for an introspective exercise. Grab a piece of paper and pencil and answer these questions:

  • What negative phrases does your dragon repeat when you fail?
  • How can your rider respond to those critiques in a loving and understanding way?
  • Write a letter to your dragon, acknowledging its fear but also reminding it of its strength.

The Transformation Begins Here

Returning to my story in the café, if I had listened to my dragon before understanding it, anxiety would have won. But now, I have tools, and I am ready to redirect that energy into something positive. Each of us has the power to change our relationship with our internal dragon, turning it into a powerful ally on our path to personal growth.

The important thing is that you are not alone on this journey. It's about listening, dialoguing, and tuning your relationship with yourself, and that's a journey that each of us can undertake.
