Master Your Dragon: A Journey Towards Self-Awareness

Master Your Dragon: A Journey Towards Self-Awareness

“It is not your shadow nor your burden. It is your flying companion.” This phrase resonates in my mind as I gaze out the window, contemplating a sky full of possibilities. Have you ever felt overwhelmed by your own thoughts, unable to navigate the ocean of doubts and fears looming over you? Today, we will explore why your mind can sometimes be your greatest enemy and how you can turn it into your best ally.

The Daily Struggle

Imagine waking up one morning, eager to face the day. You look in the mirror and, instead of feeling optimistic, you feel the urgency of the dragon that resides within you. Your mind starts to replay old failures: “You won’t be able to,” “You failed last time,” “Better not try again.” Those thoughts echo like a refrain in your head, and the self-demand becomes overwhelming. Suddenly, you can feel the pressure in your chest and the knot in your stomach. Yet at the same time, you want to take a step forward. How is it possible that you feel the need to progress but feel so trapped?

This is a dilemma many of us face daily. In the pursuit of self-improvement, we sometimes encounter the internal dragon that refuses to allow us to leave our comfort zone. Anxiety, doubt, and criticism are parts of our human experience, but what if I told you that you don't have to fight against your dragon? You can learn to fly with it!

Understanding Your Inner Dragon

Within each of us resides a dragon. This symbolic dragon is a reflection of our reptilian brain, operating from fear, criticism, and judgment. We want to control it, but that is not the solution. Why? Because the dragon is not our enemy; it is a part of us that seeks to protect us. If we can understand its nature, it will be easier to learn to guide it.

The dragon does not comprehend the rational world or nuances; it responds to basic instincts and automatic reactions. Therefore, when you face a challenge, a defensive response occurs automatically. It is essential to listen to the dragon, observe its fears rather than simply wanting to “dominate” it.

The Reins: Practical Tools

One of the most effective tools in the journey to master your dragon is the reins. These are the bridge between your intention and your action. For example, if you feel you have to do something and your dragon responds with anxiety, first rephrase your language. Instead of thinking “I have to do this,” try “I choose to do this.” This simple shift in perspective can be transformative.

Moreover, consider what you see every day. What mental images influence you? And remember, your emotions are just visitors, not permanent definitions of who you are. By naming them, you can distance yourself from their burden. Thus, learning to manage your behavior becomes a daily practice that sets a clear path forward.

The Internal Contract

Creating internal contracts with yourself can also be revealing. A simple agreement like “What I am, have, and do is enough” can curb self-demand and allow you to move forward. These contracts define how you relate to yourself and the type of support you need to continue growing.

Self-Awareness Exercise

I invite you to perform an introspection exercise. Make a list of phrases that your dragon repeats every time you face a difficult task. Once you have your list, replace them with more positive affirmations, such as “I am doing my best” or “Learning from my mistakes is part of my growth.” This will change the narrative you have with yourself.

The Practice Space

Consider establishing a weyr, a place where you can reconnect with yourself. This can be a physical or mental space where you practice how to better guide your dragon. It can be as simple as a daily walk or dedicating a few minutes to meditation. The important thing is that you return to yourself, to your reins, to your contracts, and practice self-compassion.

Reflections from an Experienced Rider

Throughout this journey, remember that the rider within you does not seek to control the dragon but works in harmony with it. The key is connection and dialogue. When the rider is present, decisions flow naturally, and life takes a clearer course. Just as the dragon needs direction and purpose, so do you.

Imagine how your life would be if you started to see each challenge as an opportunity to grow rather than a burden to bear. The next time you feel overwhelmed, ask yourself: “What would I say to a good friend in this situation?” Sometimes, the best advice we can receive comes from our wisest self: self-love.
