Awakening the Rider: How to Make Peace with Your Inner Dragon
Is your dragon holding you back? Here's the way to fly free
Today you will understand why your mind sometimes acts like a dragon that sabotages you. You will learn how to turn it into your ally, a companion for your epic flights.
"The mind is a powerful place. It can be a place of prison or a place of freedom." - Tony Robbins
The story of Clara and her dragon
Clara had always felt that there was something inside her that held her back. Every time she set out to tackle a new challenge, an internal voice began to whisper: "You can't do this," "You're not ready." This voice, like a watchful dragon, kept her chained to fear, paralyzing her at crucial moments in her life. However, after a while, Clara realized that this dragon was not an enemy, but a part of herself that needed to be understood.
One winter morning, while looking out the window, Clara heard that voice again. She decided to write in her journal the thoughts that tormented her. "Today I have convinced myself that I can't," she wrote. But at that moment, something clicked within her. If her dragon was preventing her from taking flight, maybe it was time to stop fighting and start a dialogue.
The dragon we all carry inside
The dragon, in this context, represents our reptilian brain, that part of us that responds from a place of survival. Each of us has an inner dragon that reacts to fear and criticism. However, it is not an opponent to defeat but a part of us that tries to protect us. This dragon has learned to keep us in a safe place, sometimes at the expense of our own dreams and desires.
When we feel anxiety or fear, our reptilian brain activates survival mode. This is where our internal voice or monkey mind comes into play, flooded with negative and self-critical thoughts, creating a cycle of inaction. The first step to transforming this relationship is to understand that we are not broken; we have simply been training our dragon in the wrong way.
The reins: tools to focus the dragon
One of the most effective tools for working with our dragon is the reins. The reins help us transform our intentions into concrete actions, creating a bridge between our desires and our decisions. These reins can be verbal, visual, emotional, or behavioral.
- Verbal rein: Change your internal dialogue. Instead of saying "I have to," choose "I choose." This simple change transforms the sense of obligation into an empowered choice.
- Visual rein: At the start of the day, focus on an image that inspires your intentions. Ask yourself: "What image do I want to guide my day?"
- Emotional rein: Recognize that your emotions are visitors, not definitions of who you are. By naming your feelings, you give them less power and space.
- Behavioral rein: Establish a small daily action that brings you closer to your goals. A simple habit is worth more than a thousand good plans if executed with intention.
An act of self-compassion: the deep exercise
Now that you have the tools clear, it's time to take a break. Take a moment to reflect. Make a list of the phrases your dragon repeats every time you don’t meet your expectations. Take the time to write down how it feels to hear those words. Then, rewrite those phrases with words of love and understanding that you would use with someone you love.
For example, if your dragon screams at you: "You are not capable," change that voice to: "It’s okay not to know everything; I am learning along the way."
Transforming your relationship with the dragon
In the end, Clara began to see her dragon as her flight companion, not her jailer. She decided to practice the reins and contracts exercises daily, and little by little, her dragon began to calm down. She realized she was not alone on her journey, and each time she chose to listen instead of fight, she flew higher.
