Master Your Dragon: Find Your Inner Flight
Master Your Dragon: Find Your Inner Flight
It is neither your shadow nor your burden. It is your flight companion.
Imagine this: you are in the middle of an important meeting. Stress and anxiety overwhelm you. Your mind starts flooding you with thoughts of failure. Sounds familiar, right? This is the moment when the dragon awakens. But what if I told you that understanding that dragon could be the key to unlocking your true potential? Today, I invite you on a journey where you will learn to communicate with your dragon and start flying with it, not against it.
A Resonating Quote
“Your dragon is not broken. It just needs a rider who knows where it wants to go.” – Tuyo Isaza.
An Everyday Story
I remember the first time I attended a leadership talk. The speaker began discussing his agenda, but all I could think about was the pounding of my heart. I was convinced I couldn’t do it, that I was going to fail. The voices in my head were deafening, filled with criticisms: “You’re not good enough,” “What will they say about you?”, “You always fail.” The dragon was in control, dictating every thought and every emotion. It was a painful moment, but amidst that chaos, I noticed something: the dragon was not just fear; it was also a part of me that longed to protect me. Suddenly, I understood that my first step was not to fight that dragon, but to listen to it. What was it trying to tell me? What did it really want? Thus, every time the dragon made me feel small, I learned to ask it: “What do you need?” Listening to the dragon was the first step towards my transformation.
What Signals Does Our Dragon Send Us?
Within your mind, the dragon represents your reptilian brain, your instinct, the automatic system that guides your survival decisions. When you feel anxiety, fear, or tension, the dragon is at work. It feels like an urge to flee or fight, and that’s because it is designed to protect you. The key here is to understand that it is not broken; it only needs direction and purpose. As the rider, your task is not to dominate or conquer the dragon; that would be like trying to silence a part of you that only wants help. Instead, it’s about learning to communicate, to listen to your inner voice, and to recognize that those automatic reactions are the way your mind is trying to protect you.
A Practical Tool to Guide Your Dragon
One of the biggest mistakes is thinking you can ignore the dragon. But instead, I propose a powerful tool: the reins. These are ways you can focus your attention and energy on what you truly desire. The Verbal Rein: how you talk to yourself changes how you act. Instead of thinking “I have to,” try changing it to “I choose to.” This simple modification creates a sense of agency and control. The Visual Rein: what you look at defines what you see. Ask yourself: what image are you focusing on when starting your day? Setting positive images can direct your dragon’s energy towards the appropriate action. The Emotional Rein: remember that what you feel is not who you are. When you experience intense emotions, name them as visitors; they are not your permanent identity, they are just part of the journey. The Behavioral Rein: simple daily actions with intention are worth more than a thousand plans. Choose a habit that brings you closer to your goal and commit to doing it every day.
Facing Your Dragons: A Deep Exercise
Today, I invite you to engage in an introspective exercise. Make a list of phrases that your dragon repeats when you fear failing. Be honest; write them down as they flow. Then, on another page, change them to phrases you would use with someone you love. For example: “You are not enough,” change that to “You are perfect just the way you are.” This exercise is a way to externalize those self-critical thoughts and at the same time allow yourself to cultivate inner kindness.
The Possibility of a New Flight
Now that you have learned to listen to your dragon and guide it, imagine the leadership meeting situation once again. But this time, your dragon is not screaming in fear; instead, you feel it as an ally, calmly guiding you. Fear transforms into excitement, and instead of doubting, you propel your ideas with confidence. Life will always be filled with dragons, but you do not have to face them alone. The next time you feel your dragon unleashing, remember that you have the power to reorient that energy towards what you truly desire.
