“Your dragon is not broken. It just needs a rider who knows where it wants to go.”

Facing Fear: A Daily Story

Imagine this: you are in an important meeting, fear is eating you away. Your hands are sweating, your heart is pounding, and although you have a lot to contribute, an internal voice whispers that you are not up to the task. This internal dialogue paralyzes you, making you doubt your abilities. Does this sound familiar? Many of us live in this emotional rollercoaster where our fears take control.

In this moment, it is easy to see fear as an overwhelming monster, something that sabotages us and prevents us from moving forward. But what if we could flip this narrative? If we could see that dragon, which we often call fear, as a part of us that is simply looking to be heard and guided. Today, we are going to explore how to transform this relationship, how to turn that dragon into an ally on your journey.

Listening to Your Dragon: The Internal Journey

When we face anxiety-inducing situations, our reptilian brain takes control. This ancestral mechanism activates to protect us, although its methods are often extreme. The dragon is not our enemy; it is an integral part of us that requires attention and care. When we recognize that our fears are automatic reactions, we begin to see that we are not broken; we have simply forgotten how to train our dragon.

The survival mode kicks in and all we seek is protection. In these moments, it is vital to learn to listen to that inner voice and discern between well-intentioned fear and the Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) that sabotage our growth. Teaching yourself to listen instead of silencing your dragon is the first crucial step toward transformation.

A Tool to Guide Your Dragon

Now that we understand the nature of our dragon, it is time to introduce a tool that can change the relationship you have with your fears: the verbal rein. This practice involves modifying the language you use in your internal dialogue. Instead of saying “I have to,” try saying “I choose to.” This simple verbal modification can change the narrative you have about your obligations and offer you a sense of control.

Implementing this verbal rein is straightforward: every time you find yourself about to say “I have to,” pause and rephrase it. Say it out loud or write it down. This practice not only releases the pressure you feel, but it also starts to transform your dragon from an unrelenting critic to a companion that supports your choices.

Deep Exercise: Recognizing Your Dragon

To get closer to your dragon, I propose an introspective exercise. Take a sheet of paper and write a list of the phrases that your dragon repeats every time you feel overwhelmed. Phrases like “you are not enough” or “you will fail.” Then, consult this list and rewrite each one from a more loving and understanding perspective. For example, “you don’t need to be perfect; your effort counts, and it’s okay to make mistakes.” This exercise will allow you to observe your thoughts in a new light and start to refine that internal dialogue.

A New Dawn: Possible Transformation

Imagine that after working on your relationship with your dragon, you walk into that same meeting. Your heart may still be racing, but your mind is clear; you no longer feel at the mercy of your fear. You have become the rider who guides with purpose and confidence. The internal voice that once terrified you now encourages you to share your ideas and connect with others. This is how transformation manifests; not by eliminating the dragon but by understanding and guiding its energy toward a higher purpose.
