Master Your Dragon: A Guide to Connect with Your True Self
Today you will understand how your mind can be both your ally and your enemy, and how you can start training it to work in your favor.
“It is neither your shadow nor your burden. It is your flying companion.”
A Story That Resonates
Imagine Clara, a woman who once felt filled with dreams. From a young age, she envisioned a bright future: a dream job, a fulfilling family, friends surrounding her, and the love that would drive her forward. But with every step she tried to take, doubt crept in like a dark shadow, repeating in her mind: “You are not enough, you won’t succeed.” This voice, that of her inner dragon, had become so insistent that the glow of her dreams began to fade.
Close to turning 30, Clara found herself stuck. Her job was not what she had always wanted, her personal life was a constant struggle, and her mind had become her own jailer. She felt as if she had stopped flying and had become a mere spectator of her own life, trapped in a cycle of self-demand and fear. How many of us have been there, watching our lives pass by while the dragon screams that we are not worthy of more? When did we learn to silence our dreams and listen to the voices that limit us?
One night, while going through some old photo albums, she paused at an image. There she was, smiling, full of hope. In that moment, she felt a flash of clarity. The dragon, with all its strength and terror, was not the enemy. It was a part of her, a guardian that had forgotten how to protect her. That was the spark that led her to seek help and understand that, if she wanted to fly again, she had to learn to talk to her dragon instead of fighting it.
Understanding the Inner Dragon
What happens inside us when insecurity hugs us? In neuropsychological terms, when we talk about the dragon, we refer to that primitive part of our brain, the reptilian brain, which operates predominantly in fear. This dragon is programmed to protect us, activating survival mode in the face of real or perceived threats. Sometimes, that protection feels like a chain that restricts our freedom. Let’s remember that the inner voice that says “you can’t” or “you are not enough” is merely an automatic reaction designed to prevent risk: better to be comfortable than to risk failing!
When the dragon raises its voice, the mind enters a state of alert that can sabotage our intentions and efforts. This explains why, despite wanting to advance and grow, our actions often feel blocked. But what if I told you that this part of you is not your enemy? It is vital that we learn to listen to it instead of ignoring it. The dragon needs to be guided with patience and clarity, rather than silenced or repressed.
So, how do we talk to our dragon? Instead of taking the stance of a tamer, it’s about learning to dialogue. When we accept its existence, we begin to create a bridge, a space where the voice of self-criticism transforms into an opportunity to grow. By allowing ourselves to feel and understand our insecurity, we turn it into part of our journey, giving it structure, purpose, and meaning.
Tools to Connect: The Reins
In the Dragon methodology, the reins are valuable tools that help us focus and redirect the dragon’s attention. One of the most powerful is the Verbal Rein. This exercise involves changing how you talk to yourself. Instead of saying “I have to”, change it to “I choose”. This simple change of words can transform the perception of obligation into a conscious choice that activates your personal power.
The Visual Rein is also crucial. Ask yourself: what image do you focus on at the beginning of the day? Maybe it’s an image of your goals or dreams. Find them and place them in front of you for your dragon to see. Visualizing your objectives helps you maintain focus on what you truly desire.
A third tool is the Emotional Rein. What you feel does not define who you are. Name your emotions as visitors, not identities. Allow yourself to feel fear without letting it define you. Remind yourself that it’s okay to have doubts; the key is not to let those doubts take control of your decisions.
Lastly, the Behavioral Rein teaches us that daily habits build the path to our dreams. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple but intentional action. Establish a daily routine that brings you closer to your goal, and each small step will help you build confidence.
Deep Exercise: Connect with Your Dragon
Now, take a moment to reflect. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. On a piece of paper, make a list of the negative phrases that your dragon repeats when you feel like you’re failing. They might say: “You are not enough” or “You don’t deserve this”. Then, next to each phrase, write a positive response you would use if you were speaking to a loved one. For example, change “you are not enough” to “you are on your way and that’s what matters”. This exercise will not only open your eyes to the truths you have been telling yourself, but it will also begin to create a new narrative in your mind.
A New Beginning
Returning to Clara’s story, by applying these tools and exercises, she began to redefine her relationship with her dragon. Instead of being a dark and terrifying place, it became a source of valuable information about her fears, desires, and dreams. With every step, her life began to change: she dared to seek a new job, to leave behind relationships that no longer served her, and to surround herself with supportive people. In doing so, she not only began to fly again but her life became filled with purpose and unexpected joys.
Remember that the relationship between the rider and the dragon is not one of domination but of collaboration. The more you practice and want to strengthen this connection, the easier it will be to deal with life’s challenges. Practice is key: a rider who does not train forgets how to guide.
