The Flight of the Dragon: Conquering the Present

“Your dragon is not broken. It just needs a rider who knows where it wants to go.”

Imagine for a moment that you are a dragon rider. The majestic creature under your command is powerful, but often gets carried away by fear and the immediacy of the moment. This dragon represents your primal instincts, those moments when panic overtakes your logic and makes you act impulsively, without considering the consequences. But you are the rider; you have the ability to live in the present, without allowing the shadows of the past or the anxieties of the future to dominate you.

Today I invite you to reflect on how you and your dragon face daily challenges with such different perspectives. The dragon lives in a constant present, never stopping to lament what has happened or to plan for what is to come. Its flight is a pure, instinctive act, soaring through the skies without worrying about the land left behind. However, the power of flight lies in your ability as a rider to help it see beyond the immediate.

A Everyday Encounter

Remember that morning when you woke up feeling overwhelmed. The alarm clock sounded like an enraged dragon, and you, halfway between the dream world and reality, began to feel the pressure in your chest. “I have so much to do. I can’t fail,” you thought as you got out of bed. But the dragon within you, that protective instinct, only saw the immediate: the endless to-do list that seemed like unbreakable mountains.

As you dressed, you felt the growing fear beginning to surpass your reason. Your mind recalled past failures and anticipated future fears, making assumptions about what could go wrong. The voices of insecurity echoed in your head: “What if I’m not on time?” “What if I’m not good enough?” Without realizing it, you had let anxiety steer your flight.

As you mounted your “dragon”—that instinct afraid of losing control—you began to release your fears, letting them go. However, it wasn’t easy. You still found yourself tangled in that cycle of negative thoughts, feeling your dragon pulling in opposite directions, leading your mind to even greater chaos. But then, you remembered your role as a rider. You regained control.

Beyond the Chaos of the Moment

In that moment of tension, you understood that what was happening in your mind was a dance between the dragon and you. On one side was the dragon, in its pure essence, rejecting uncertainty and crying out for direction. On the other was you, the conscious observer, the engineer of your own response. This duality is fundamental: the dragon is not your enemy, is it? It is an intrinsic part of you, eager for stability, that just needs guidance.

So you sat for a moment, took a deep breath, and remembered the tools you had at your disposal, the reins of your dragon and the power of your intentions. You realized that the present does not have to be overwhelming. You can fly with your dragon, even as you face it!

Internal Conversations: Listening to Your Dragon

Experiences like these are fertile ground for learning to listen to your dragon. When you faced self-criticism and anxiety, you could delve into the layers of your mind to understand the internal voices that limit you. The voice of the dragon speaks from fear, and when you interrupt that negative cycle with healthy internal dialogue, you can start to reconfigure your flight.

Training with Practical Tools

You have several tools at your disposal, the verbal, visual, emotional, and behavioral reins. One of the most powerful is the verbal rein: how you talk to yourself changes how you act. The next time you feel overwhelmed, try reframing your internal dialogue. Instead of saying “I have to”, say “I choose to”. This small shift can transform a task from a burden to a personal choice.

Remember, decisions are cleaner and more useful when the rider is conscious and present. So avoid phrases that feed anxiety and replace them with statements that empower your dragon to soar to new heights.

Reflection Exercise: Dialoguing with Your Dragon

Take a moment to further develop this awareness with a deep exercise. I propose that you make a list of all the phrases your dragon repeats when you fail. Then, rewrite them with the kindness you would give yourself, as those voices are just temporary visitors. Ask yourself: What would you say to a good friend if they faced the same circumstances?

As you write the answers, notice how your emotions shift as you reframe your internal dialogue. By doing this, you allow your dragon to feel it has a purpose, not an order; you can guide it with clarity and assertiveness.

The Transformation: From Chaos to Conquest

Upon returning from that introspective journey, imagine that overwhelming morning transforms into strength. You understand that you are not alone, that your dragon and you are partners on this journey. When you feel present and determined, the dragon follows your rhythm, rising to new possibilities and towards the adventure beyond the horizon. Thus, the flight becomes not only physical but also symbolic: it is the conquest of each challenge.
