Discover Your Inner Dragon: The Strength That Lives in You
Today you will understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you, and how to start turning it into your ally.
“Your dragon is not broken. It just needs a rider who knows where they want to go.”
A Story of Struggle and Discovery
Imagine Clara, a young woman full of dreams who has always felt that her life is marked by a heavy pain in her chest. From work to personal relationships, she lives in a constant tug-of-war with her own being. Fear envelops her, making her doubt every decision. One day, in the middle of a conversation with a friend, she realizes that she spends more time battling with her inner dragon than enjoying life. “Why do I always feel like I’m about to fall?” she asks aloud, feeling the knot in her stomach tighten even more.
At that moment, her friend tells her about the idea of the inner dragon: a representation of all those fears and beliefs we have accumulated over the years, and how, as riders of this dragon, we can learn to fly free and with purpose.
The Dragon and the Rider: A Symbiotic Relationship
The dragon, symbolizing our reptilian mind, is always lurking, reacting from fear and the need for control. It is not an enemy to be defeated; it is an essential part of us that seeks to protect us. Often, our dragons get out of control because we have fed them with fears, doubts, and insecurities. However, the real power lies in understanding and connecting with our dragon. When a person learns to calm their mind, the dragon finds its place.
When Clara learned this, she began a transformative journey. Little by little, she realized that, as a rider, she had the ability to guide her dragon, to teach it to fly without wreaking havoc in its path. Instead of letting fear dominate her, she chose to listen to the voice of her dragon, negotiating a relationship of trust and respect.
What Happens Inside Us?
When we assume that our dragon is our enemy, we fall into a destructive cycle. Neuropsychology shows us that our reptilian brain reacts to situations perceived as threats, activating survival mode. This automatic reaction can explain why we feel overwhelmed, anxious, or trapped.
From there, the internal voice arises that criticizes, judges, and often limits our aspirations. This internal dialogue becomes a dragon that sabotages us. But there is hope. By being aware of this dynamic, we can begin to work in harmony with our dragon.
The key is to listen to the dragon, not as a tyrant, but as an ally. The dragon, although powerful, needs purpose and direction; otherwise, it can become destructive. Therefore, we must refine our relationship with it through agreements and reins that guide us toward successful flight.
Tools to Tame Your Dragon
A fundamental tool is the Verbal Reins. You talk to yourself, and in doing so, you determine how you act. Instead of the command "I have to," switch to "I choose." This simple adjustment in language can change your perspective.
Another powerful practice is the Visual Reins. Ask yourself: what image do you focus on at the start of the day? The way you visualize your goals influences your path. And don’t forget the Emotional Reins: remember that your emotions are visitors, not your identity. Naming them can give you space to manage them without letting them control your actions.
Exercise for Introspection
Start by writing a list of phrases that your dragon repeats every time you feel you have failed. Then, replace them with phrases you would use with someone you love. This exercise will not only free your mind but also allow you to see how much power you have to shape your internal narrative.
A New Flight Awaits You
Returning to Clara's story is to see how, little by little, her life changed. By learning to accompany her dragon, she realized she no longer needed to feel fear before every decision. Now she flies with purpose, knowing that the dragon and the rider are complementary forces. The harmony between the two creates a smoother, freer, and more meaningful journey.
