Master Your Inner Dragon: The Journey to Balance

Today you're going to understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you, and how to start turning it into your ally.

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude.” – William James

The Internal Struggle: An Awakening

Imagine you are in an important meeting. Your heart is racing, and you feel pressure building in your chest. You look at your hands, sweaty and trembling. In that instant, something inside you bursts. It's as if a dragon is awakening, anxious and confused, and you feel more like a prisoner than a rider. Instead of speaking confidently, your voice shakes, and what should have been an opportunity becomes a high-risk situation.

This inner dragon, which many call anxiety, is not your enemy. In fact, it is a part of you that awakens in response to what it perceives as danger. But what if I told you that you are not alone in this battle? We all have a dragon, and getting to know it can change the story.

The Science Behind the Dragon

When we talk about the dragon, we are referring to your reptilian brain. This part of your mind operates at a more primitive level, instinctively taking care of your survival. It feels threatened by fear, criticism, and judgment, which can lead you to react impulsively.

Have you noticed how, in moments of stress, you can fire off responses that are disproportionate to the situation? This is because your dragon does not distinguish between a real threat and a mere emotion. This automatic reaction can cause you to lose perspective, resulting in defensive and inauthentic behavior.

Understanding that the dragon is not the problem, but rather your way of relating to it, is the first step toward transformation.

Mastering the Art of Collaboration

Now that you recognize your dragon's nature, the next step is to learn to establish a collaborative relationship. As a rider, you are not here to dominate it. Instead, it’s about listening and guiding. When you start to dialogue with your dragon, the opportunity arises to create an agreement: you give it purpose and direction, and in return, it becomes a powerful ally instead of an obstacle.

The Reins of Attention

The reins are essential tools for focusing the dragon's attention. Here are some of them:

  • Verbal Rein: Change “I have to” to “I choose to.” This simple modification alters your perception of the situation.
  • Visual Rein: The image you choose at the start of the day can define your path. What are you choosing to see?
  • Emotional Rein: Observe your emotions as visitors, not identities. This will free you from restrictive labels.
  • Behavioral Rein: Small daily actions with intention can redefine your course.

The Practice Space: Your Weyr

Your weyr is the place where you can practice this relationship with yourself. It can be any space you feel safe: a notebook, a conversation with a friend, or a walk outdoors. What matters is that it’s a space where you return to yourself, to your contracts and reins.

Self-Awareness Exercise

Now, it’s time to dive deeper. I invite you to make a list of phrases that your dragon repeats when you feel you are failing. Recognize them. Then, change them for phrases you would use with someone you love. Allow yourself to experience the power of self-compassion and transformation.

A New Beginning

Remember, you are not at war with your dragon. Life doesn’t have to be a battle but a dance. You can walk alongside your dragon, with balance and peace. Inviting it to be part of your journey is the beginning of a new adventure.
