Master Your Inner Dragon: The Battle of Trust
Master Your Inner Dragon: The Battle of Trust
Understanding the Internal Struggle
One of the most universal experiences is finding ourselves caught between our instinct and our rationality. We have all felt, at various moments, as if we have an inner dragon within us: a fierce part that reacts, defends itself, and often pushes us to act impulsively. But what does this dragon really represent?
As riders of our own mind, it is crucial to understand that the battle is not just between us and the dragon; it is between the beliefs rooted in our mind and the reality we wish to live. Thus, the dragon is not an enemy to be defeated but a flight companion that needs to be understood, guided, and, above all, reconciled.
The Story We All Know
Let’s think about Claudia. A successful woman with a promising career. However, in crucial moments, she feels tremendous panic, as if the ground were opening beneath her feet.
The night before an important presentation, her mind begins to attack: “What if you are not up to the task? What if you are ridiculed?” murmurs an inner voice that is her dragon, activating her deepest fears. Claudia, feeling trapped, tries to ignore that voice, but the dragon is clever; it keeps up the pressure. In her struggle, she loses her composure and, consequently, her opportunity.
We must remember that the dragon is not the problem. The real issue is the lack of understanding and communication about who it is and what it wants. Its history, filled with fears and past traumas, plays a crucial role in that sense of danger, where every future challenge becomes a threat to be avoided.
The Science Behind the Internal Struggle
Scientists have found that the reptilian brain, that part of our being that acts from instinct and fear, is intrinsic to our existence. This inner dragon reacts to any sign of threat, even when that threat is just a shadow of our past. And while it seems to act against our reason, its true intention is to protect us.
Understanding how this dragon works is key. When we are in survival mode, our body responds automatically. This does not mean we are broken! It simply means we have trained our dragon to react to what it perceives as danger. The rider's task, in this case, is to brought calm, reflection, and understanding.
The Reins: Tools for Transformation
So, how can we start collaborating with this dragon? This is where the reins come into play. They are tools that help us focus attention and transform that automatic reaction.
- Verbal Rein: Change “I have to” to “I choose.” This redefines your intention behind the action.
- Visual Rein: Identify what image you focus on when starting the day. This image can guide your emotional state.
- Emotional Rein: Instead of being your emotions, name them as visitors. This depersonalizes the experience and allows for better management.
- Behavioral Rein: Remember that habit shapes the path; a small daily action with intention counts more than a thousand empty plans.
A Practical Exercise for Introspection
Sometimes, the first step to reconciling with the dragon is taking time to look inward. I invite you to make a list of the phrases that your dragon tends to repeat when you face a difficult situation. What does it say to you when you fail? Now, rewrite each of these phrases from the love you would offer someone you love. This simple activity can open the door to a new way of speaking to yourself, creating a safe space for learning and growth.
The Possibility of Flight
When the dragon and the rider begin to work together, the relationship transforms. The internal struggle turns into a dance. Imagine that every time the dragon is activated, instead of panicking, you can use tools to calm it down. Flight becomes an expression of trust and mutual collaboration, where both the dragon and the rider are aligned on the same journey.
We are here to learn and grow. Every internal conversation can be an opportunity to understand more about ourselves, and every interaction with our dragon brings us closer to being that integral version of ourselves that we wish to achieve.
