In brief: Learn to transform your inner struggles into a partnership with your anxiety, allowing harmony between you and your inner dragon.

Taming the Dragon: A Guide for the Inner Rider

How can your dragon be a companion instead of a burden?

There are moments when life feels like a constant battle; you feel like a fearful rider trying to control an untamed dragon. Today, you're going to understand how to turn that tense relationship into a harmonious dance where both can fly together.

"Your dragon is not broken. It just needs a rider who knows where it wants to go."

A Relatable Story

Sometimes, I wake up in the morning with a paralyzing sense of anxiety. I remember one particular day, an ordinary Monday. The alarm went off, and my mind began its usual corrosion: "What if you fail at work? What if you disappoint everyone?" My dragon started screaming, and I found myself trapped in a cycle of self-doubt. I sat on the edge of the bed feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. I felt like a rider who had lost control and was just trying to survive instead of guiding my dragon.

I took a deep breath and decided to face the moment. I remembered that the dragon was not an enemy. So I closed my eyes and did a visualization exercise: I imagined my dragon, big and feared, and began to talk to it. “What do you need today?” I asked. And, for the first time, I understood that its scream was not about fear of failure but a call to action and preparation.

What’s Really Happening Inside

Your dragon, the reptilian brain, reacts from instinct, fear, and the desire to control. Often, it feels like an enemy, but in reality, it acts to protect you. By not listening to it, we feed confusion and chaos. These automatic reactions are ancient and powerful; they seek a response to what they perceive as danger.

So what happens when anxiety traps you? Your inner voice, the dialogue perceived as critical, becomes overwhelming. The dragon screams, recalling your past failures, while the rider, your consciousness, struggles to be heard. But here’s a truth: it’s not broken; it’s just been trained incorrectly. It’s not about dominating it, but about understanding it, creating a dialogue where both can coexist and thrive.

A Practical Tool to Connect

I propose a tool: the reins. Let’s start with the Verbal Rein. How do you speak to yourself? Change “I have to” to “I choose.” This simple change transforms your focus. When you decide everything you do, your dragon begins to trust you. Saying “I choose to face this challenge” instead of “I have to do this” creates a sense of autonomy and empowerment.

The Visual Rein is also powerful. Each morning, take a moment to identify an image that represents your intention for the day. Maybe it’s an image of calm or success. This image will be your beacon, guiding both your dragon and yourself towards a common goal.

Deep Exercise: Internal Self-Motivation

I invite you to do an introspective exercise. Take some time and write a list of phrases that your dragon repeats when you feel you are failing. Now, review each phrase and transform that narrative. Ask yourself: what would you say with love to a friend facing the same struggles? Write those new phrases down and keep them as a reminder that you and your dragon can find a path together.

A Hopeful Conclusion

As you begin to learn how to dialogue with your dragon, transformation starts. Imagine waking up one morning and, instead of being crushed by anxiety, feeling a wave of confidence. Visualize your day as a joint flight, where the dragon feels supported and the rider can guide it without fear. This practice of understanding and empathy can change not only your life but also the way you interact with the world.
