Connecting with Your Dragon Through Meditation
Today you will understand why your mind sometimes sabotages you, and how to begin turning it into your ally.
“The stillness of the mind is the first step towards the soul's flight.”
The Reality of the Inner Journey
Imagine you are a young rider who has just embarked on a journey with your dragon, a majestic and powerful being. However, as you start to fly, you begin to feel the pressure of the height, of the doubts, and of the dangers lurking in the air. You wonder if you are really capable of doing this, if you should have even tried. The voice in your mind begins to echo: “What if you fail? What if you are not prepared?” This is an internal battle that many of us face, a constant struggle between the desire to fly and the weight of our insecurities.
Sometimes, those thoughts can feel like a threatening dragon, instead of the companion they really are. This common experience is not only distressing but can also stall you, preventing you from moving forward on the path to your goals. However, there is a powerful tool at your disposal: meditation.
Connecting with Your Inner Dragon
Meditation, although often seen as a practice reserved for monks or yogis, is really an art that every rider can master. It is a transformative method that allows for a clearer dialogue with your dragon: your mind. But why is it so hard to connect with that part of ourselves? The answer lies in the way our brain functions.
The Dragon and the Rider: A Dance of Power and Vulnerability
The human mind functions similarly to a dragon; its essence is deep and powerful, but it can also be reactive and fearful. Your dragon, representing your reptilian brain, responds to perceived threats with primal instinct. That’s why, in moments of distress, we react from a place of fear. It is here that meditation comes into play: it provides a space to calm that automatic reaction and bring attention to the present.
By practicing meditation, we begin to build bridges between our consciousness (the rider) and our instinctive reaction (the dragon). With each session, we fine-tune our communication, allowing the dragon to not just be a being we fear but a companion we can learn to guide.
Practicing Daily Meditation
To start meditating and improve your connection with your dragon, here is a simple exercise you can incorporate into your daily routine. The process is straightforward and really effective:
- Find Your Weyr: Choose a quiet place where you can sit without being interrupted. It can be a corner of your home, a nearby park, or even your room. This is your practice space.
- Set a Time: Reserve 5 to 10 minutes each day to meditate. Consistency is key.
- Close Your Eyes and Breathe: Inhale deeply through your nose, hold the breath for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. This simple act will help calm your mind and center your thoughts.
- Visualize Your Dragon: Imagine what your dragon looks like, its color, its wings, how it flies. Allow this image to fill your mind. Ask it: “What do you need to feel at peace?” Listen without judging.
- Reflect: After a few minutes, return to the present and write down any thoughts or feelings you experienced.
Over time, you will notice that this exercise not only calms your nerves but also gives you a new perspective on yourself and your goals.
A Deepening Exercise
As you dive deeper into this practice, here is a reflective exercise that can deepen your connection:
- Make a list of the negative or self-criticizing thoughts your dragon frequently repeats. Write them down without censorship.
- Then, choose a positive phrase for each negative thought. For example, if a thought is: “I am not good enough,” rewrite it as: “I am constantly growing and learning.”
- Review your list regularly and allow those new affirmations to become your new inner voice.
A New Perspective
Now, let’s return to the story of the young rider facing his fears. Imagine that instead of being overwhelmed by fear, he decides to practice meditation. Through his daily routine of calm and connection, he begins to listen better to his dragon. With each gap of silence, he reinforces his ability to respond to challenges rather than react to them.
Thus, the flight that once seemed filled with fear transforms into an opportunity to explore new heights, to enjoy what life offers alongside his dragon.
